Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating filiform needles into various points on the body to relieve pain Pain is the unpleasant and aversive feeling common to such experiences as a stubbed toe, a headache, a burnt finger, and salt in a wound. Typically, pain is characterized by its intensity, location and duration. It is initiated by stimulation of nociceptors in the peripheral nervous system, or by damage to or malfunction of the peripheral or or for therapeutic purposes.[3] The word acupuncture comes from the Latin acus, "needle", and pungere, "to prick". In Standard Mandarin Standard Mandarin, or Standard Chinese, known by various names to native speakers, is the official modern Chinese spoken language used in mainland China and Taiwan, and is one of the four official languages of Singapore, acupuncture is called 針砭 (zhēnbiān), or a related word, 針灸 (zhēnjiǔ), which refers to acupuncture together with moxibustion Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy using moxa, or mugwort herb. It plays an important role in the traditional medical systems of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet, and Mongolia. Suppliers usually age the mugwort and grind it up to a fluff; practitioners burn the fluff or process it further into a stick that resembles a (non-.[4] According to traditional Chinese medicine Traditional Chinese Medicine, also known as TCM , includes a range of traditional medical practices originating in China. Although well accepted in the mainstream of medical care throughout East Asia, it is considered an alternative medical system in much of the western world, acupuncture points Acupuncture points , also called acupoints, are locations on the body that are the focus of acupuncture, acupressure, sonopuncture and laser acupuncture treatment. Several hundred acupuncture points are located, it is considered, along meridians (connected points across the anatomy which affect a specific organ or other part of the body). There are situated on meridians The meridian is a concept central to traditional Chinese medical techniques such as acupuncture, and to martial arts such as tai chi and qigong. According to these practices, there are channels along which the energy or qi of the psychophysical system is considered to flow. Such techniques are said to achieve their effects by manipulation and, along which qi In traditional Chinese culture, qi is an active principle forming part of any living thing (a "life energy" Vitalism has a long history in medical philosophies: most traditional healing practices posited that disease was the result of some imbalance in the vital energies which distinguish living from non-living matter. In the Western tradition founded by Hippocrates, these vital forces were associated with the four temperaments and humours; Eastern), flows. Modern acupuncture texts present them as ideas that are useful in clinical practice and continue to inform the practice of acupuncture,[5][6] but there is no evidence to support their existence and they have not been reconciled with contemporary knowledge about biology, physics or chemistry.[7][8]
The earliest written record of acupuncture is the Chinese China (simplified Chinese: 中国; traditional Chinese: 中國; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōngguó ; Tongyong Pinyin: Jhongguó; Wade-Giles: Chung¹kuo²) is a cultural region, an ancient civilization, and, depending on perspective, a national or multinational entity extending over a large area in East Asia text Shiji (史記, English: Records of the Grand Historian The Records of the Grand Historian, also known in English by the Chinese name Shiji , written from 109 BC to 91 BC, was the magnum opus of Sima Qian, in which he recounted Chinese history from the time of the Yellow Emperor until his own time. It is comparable in importance to the Hippocratic Corpus in Greek medicine or the works of Galen (黃帝內經, English: Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon).[9] Different variations of acupuncture are practiced and taught throughout the world. Acupuncture has been the subject of active scientific research Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of since the late 20th century[10] but it remains controversial among conventional medical researchers and clinicians.[10] Due to the invasive nature of acupuncture treatments, it is difficult to create studies that use proper scientific controls When an experiment is conducted for the purpose of determining the effect of a single variable of interest on a particular system, a scientific control is used to minimize the unintended influence of other variables on the same system. Such extraneous variables include researcher bias, environmental changes, and biological variation. Scientific.[10][11][12][13][14]:126 Some scholarly reviews have concluded that the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment can be explained largely through the placebo effect A placebo is a sham medical intervention. In one common placebo procedure, a patient is given an inert sugar pill, told that it may improve his/her condition, but not told that it is in fact inert. Such an intervention may cause the patient to believe the treatment will change his/her condition; and this belief does indeed sometimes have a,[15][16] while other studies have suggested some efficacy in the treatment of specific conditions.[10][17][18] The World Health Organization The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. Established on 7 April 1948, and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the agency inherited the mandate and resources of its predecessor, the Health Organization, which had been an agency of the published a review of controlled trials using acupuncture and concluded it was effective for the treatment of 28 conditions and there was evidence to suggest it may be effective for several dozen more,[19] though this review has been criticized by several scientists for bias and a focus on studies with a poor methodology.[20][21] Reports from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine or NCCAM, is a United States government agency. NCCAM is dedicated to exploring complementary and alternative healing practices in the context of rigorous science, training complementary and alternative medicine researchers, and disseminating authoritative information to the public and (NCCAM), the American Medical Association The American Medical Association , founded in 1847 and incorporated 1897, is the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States. While its membership has declined in recent years, it claims approximately 20% of practicing physicians as members. The AMA's stated mission is to promote the art and science of medicine for (AMA) and various government reports have studied and commented on the efficacy (or lack thereof) of acupuncture. There is general agreement that acupuncture is safe when administered by well-trained practitioners using sterile needles, and that further research is appropriate.[11][22][23][24]

A. I seriously doubt that your friend is doing acupuncture on himself. He may have meant acuPRESSURE. It is a manual form of acupuncture. If your headache is tension-related you can try these acrupressure techniques: Using the palm of your hand and the flat-surfaces of your fingers (i.e., not the tips), firmly grip the meaty part of the back of your neck. Hold that grip for about a minute and SLOWLY release. Then using the same type of grip, grasp the muscles that go down both sides of the neck to the tops of the shoulders (called the trapezius). Again hold for a minute and slowly release.
