Education or teaching in the broadest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.

Etymologically the word education contains educare (latin) "bring up" which is related to educere "bring out", "bring forth what is within", "bring out potential" and ducere "to lead".

Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, such as in museums and libraries, with the Internet and in life experience. Many non-traditional education options are now available and continue to evolve.

The right to education has been established as a basic human right: since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13.

What is the best education model for a child today and where can I find it in the world?
Q. There are several options for a child's education in today's world. There are variations in curriculum, teaching methodologies, cultural values, goals of education. There are novel options available today such as unschooling and home schooling that were not as common earlier. What then is an ideal educational system for a child from school through undergraduate and graduation? Where is the best education system available in the world for each of these levels?

A. Globally Denmark is considered to have the best public education system. It spends the most on education per member of the population. If you visit the websites of Danish schools you get a strong feeling of an ordered and caring system. Other Scandinavian countries also have a good reputation especially Finland. As far as methodologies go, there are supporters and detractors for every system, so you cannot really compare.

How does an education background check work?
Q. I am up for a position and they are in the process of running different background checks on me. The one that concerns me is the education background check. I am exactly one class shy of earning the BS degree that I claimed on my CV. I walked during graduation and everything, but I never got the *incomplete* for that class cleared up and, hence, never completely fulfilled my graduation requirements. In an education background check, do companies verify that you have the degree or just that you attended the university during the dates you claimed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A. An education verification typically will verify the highest level of degree obtained. If you did not actually graduate, then it will be reported as such. Many colleges and universities have chosen to outsource their verifications to a third party, so the background screening company usually does not even talk to the school to find any additional information. I would suggest clearing this up. As a follow up, there are fewer companies that verify education backgrounds then criminal backgrounds.

What is your philosophy of higher education?
Q. I am trying to write a paper for one of my classes, and am having a hard time finding information on the topic. Our prof wants us to get others philosophies of higher education and evaluate them and come up with our own. However, when I search "philosophy of higher education" all I get is info on PhD programs! So, if you are a higher ed administrator or an educator, what is your philosophy of higher education, or what is your college's philosophy? Also if you have any tips on where to find this information, or better ways to search, please let me know! Thanks for your help!

A. One reason why you may not be finding anything specifically on this topic is because it is subjective and interpretive. My opinion is that higher education is fine if it has a practical application. For instance, practicing law or becoming a doctor but there are many other professions where this could hamper the individual. From a professional aspect, the worst Engineers I have ever had on my staff or worked with me are PhD's. Their minds are developed in such an analytical manner that they become dysfunctional. Also, this is compounded by people who achieve degrees all in the same field i.e. engineering. I think it is great from a science perspective but from management or operatability it is useless. I would rather see an… [cont.]
