Where do health and wellness practitioners work?
Q. Where do health and wellness practitioners work? In clinics? Do they just speak to people? Do they have clients that they teach to be more healthy? I can't find a good website about what they exactly do!
Asked by Claire - Tue Jul 21 11:30:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They can work in any holistic health office. In the area I'm from (Los Angeles area) most will train for a specific specialty such as herbs, colon therapy, lymphatic drainage, etc. These specialties help one build a clientele since in this economy not many people want to pay to be talked to and when so much info can be easily found through books and such. Then many will rent office space - usually a room - in a larger office where there is already client traffic. This is the normal starting course as in this area there are a lot of people, a lot of practitioners, but not a lot of places that "hire" for that type of work. In my case, I started out as a Nutritional Counselor, then trained for massage therapy and then colon therapy. I… [cont.]

Is it difficult for Nurse Practitioners to find employment?
Q. I am very interested in becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I am currently completing my Bachelor's degree and will be applying for the MSN-FNP program next year (they accept direct entry applicants). It doesn't seem like there are many job postings for Nurse Practitioners in the hospitals within an hour of here, though. Is it becoming difficult to find NP jobs? Will I have to be open to relocation?
Asked by Curiouser and curiouser - Fri Dec 11 15:52:04 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nurse Practitioners and nurses, for that matter need to be open minded about relocating for the most opportunities. Trouble is, cities where there are large teaching facilities for these programs have a glut of new health care professionals that want to stay in the area after graduation. But, there are plenty of opportunites elsewhere, especially Florida and California. I just had a conversation with a M.D. about an hour ago about the growing shortage of primary care physicians over the coming years. She believes that FNP's will be required to help fill these gaps.. If your ultimate goal is to stay near family, you should be able to move back to home base in a few years . Hope I helped you.

How many hours a week residency Family Practitioners?
Q. How many hours a week do you think most future Family Practitioners have to work in residency programs?
Asked by College - Sun Sep 6 15:05:41 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As far as I know, there are no FNP residency programs. If you mean their clinical residencies in grad school, then I'd guess 8+ hrs/day. Many NP programs offer a part-time track. But if you're full time, don't plan on working.

A. Shrek held that ogres were like onions. I will go with both assertions to a degree but fear is something which is pervasive and not confined to one layer. Layers also overlap and there are more layers than listed.

What do you think of Nurse Practitioners as medical providers?
Q. I went to see a nurse practitioner and she spent more time with me, talked to me and actually listened to what I had to say. I have never experienced that before. What are your experiences with nurse practitioners as compared to MD's, DO's and Physician Assistants?
Asked by jaikala - Fri Jul 20 15:58:44 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It's not the title that's good or bad or better. It's the person who holds that title. Some people are more dedicated, caring, knowledgable and intelligent than other medical practioners. You just have to find theses people, regardless of their title.

Will alternative care practitioners have a case for an antitrust lawsuit?
Q. Their patients will be forced to buy mandatory health insurance, but that health insurance will not cover their care. This will result in fewer patients being able to afford care from alternative health practitioners, since their patients will be impoverished by the required health insurance. Is this designed to drive alternative health care practitioners out of business?
Asked by Pascha - Tue Sep 15 07:07:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This depends on what the government and insurance companies decide is alternative care. For example Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states. However, licensing does not mean that insurance companies are mandated to cover it. The current situation is of course that most alternative practitioners are not licensed or regulated and are also not covered by insurance. I would not expect that any insurance would cover any practices not established and regulated. Unfortunately, this is just another example of what happens when Americans try to quick fix (like we do everything else) a comprehensive health care system rather than studying those that already exist and trying to eliminate some of their weaknesses and keep their strengths. A. Intimidation. Crossed arms make the biceps look bigger. Because strong arms are a primal indicator of overall strength, when someone is trying to appear tough, they cross their arms.

A. Each state has their own definition of what a person who does massage can call themselves. The first state to license massage therapists was Ohio I believe but I am not sure what they called massage therapists. You can check with the OH State Board for massage to see and take a look at how other states designate terms for people who do massage.

How many massage practitioners ARE and ARE NOT going to renew their NCBTMB certification? Why?
Q. I am not renewing mine. I see no benefit to handing over any more money and their so-called "standards of excellence" are insulting.
Asked by Sabeena - Mon Sep 7 19:26:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The NCBTMB standard from the start wasn't something I seen as being of any great value because I graduated from a 1000 hour course and NCBTMB only requires 500 to 700 hours, so I never joined. Even with Continuing Education there really is no useful guide line for a 'standard of excellence' set-up with in the massage career field like there is in other career field, that can tangibly warrant a certain elevated level of experience that invokes different levels of pay. Continuing Education is a great thing, but it doesn't always play a governing roll in the worth or excellence of one therapist over another : there is a very important 'spiritual' element that you can't put a value on. The worth of a massage therapist has always been… [cont.]

What type of weapons do Shotokan karate practitioners use ?
Q. I am actually very curious cause i believe weapons can actually help to perfect ones own ability to fight. And or to strive to be at peace.

A. A weapon will NOT help your ability to fight! ANY weapon in its truest form is an extension of the body rather than part of it. A weapon will however, during practice will give you more of an awareness of your body and its mechanics. If you want to learn weapons, ask your Sensei or a reputable teacher what may suit YOUR body style and abilities.

Q. Under normal circumstances, before a person undergoes surgery, they are asked if they wear contact lenses and are asked to remove them. What happens in the case of those individuals that require emergency surgery due to accident?

A. They have a little stick with what looks like a suction cup attached to the end. I don't know if that's how they still do it, but they used to do it that way. Are you worried about having someone stick their finger in your eye some day? I'd worry more about my underwear! now a-days - it's not like it's listed on your driver's license - I got my license before I got glasses...and never thought to change it...who knows if they even check for things like that...and with contacts being so thin, they may not even notice if they check your eyes and your contact slides back...

What do you think of the health care provided by nurse practitioners?
Q. I love my NP. She spends way more time with me than my doctor. The thing is she says many doctors are against NP's and are trying to start legislation that really restricts their practice. I don't think NP's are a replacement for physicians, but they certainly seem to be well equipped to handle minor illnesses and other not so minor problems. They cost a lot less than a physician which is great for those without health insurance (about 40% of US). What are your thoughts on this?

A. Dear Mispris... I agree 100% with you. As a cancer survivor, I see a nurse practioner every month. He suggests, the doctors signs and indeed seems to give me more care than the doctor himself. Speaking of 40% without insurance, insurance as we knew it, is becoming extinct for our health. Can Neonatal Nurse Practitioners write prescriptions?
Q. I'm currently in nursing school and I'm looking ahead to master's programs. I think I want to be a neonatal nurse practitioner, but I was wondering about the prescriptions. I know family nurse practitioners can write them, but does that apply to all nurse practitioners? Also, are there any restrictions on what you can prescribe and who you can prescribe it for? For example, if someone in my family got sick or a friend, could I write them a prescription for amoxicillin? Or is there some kind of rule against that?
Asked by Teena - Sun Jul 26 01:56:08 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Whether or not a NP can write prescriptions depends on the state. NPs are dependent prescribers. You can only write for what your physician says you can write. You cannot write for family or friends unless they are patients of your physician. A neonatal NP can only write for neonatal related prescriptions. If you write outside of your scope of practice, your license can be revoked.

A. Of course the same rules do not apply ... if they did, their "treatments" would have to undergo scientific testing and the medical approval process mandated by FDA ... and the 'practitioners' would all have to be licensed ..

Asked by Commo's - Sat May 16 05:46:35 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're studying a pure grappling system, and a striking system with a bit of grappling. You're not learning two different ways of throwing a punch. Naturally, that will be less confusing than if you were taking two different striking systems. I started off with Shorin-Ryu karate and studied it for over a decade. A few years ago I studied Goju-Ryu for a few months. While there were some similarities, I found myself taking steps that were much too large when doing two-man drills; this put me out of range for counter attacks in Goju, but would have granted me enough space to return with a lunge in Shorin. The "blocks" were also much more circular in Goju, and while that didn't take as much adjustment, it was still one more subtle thing… [cont.]
