Is it difficult for Nurse Practitioners to find employment?
Q. I am very interested in becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I am currently completing my Bachelor's degree and will be applying for the MSN-FNP program next year (they accept direct entry applicants). It doesn't seem like there are many job postings for Nurse Practitioners in the hospitals within an hour of here, though. Is it becoming difficult to find NP jobs? Will I have to be open to relocation?

A. Nurse Practitioners and nurses, for that matter need to be open minded about relocating for the most opportunities. Trouble is, cities where there are large teaching facilities for these programs have a glut of new health care professionals that want to stay in the area after graduation. But, there are plenty of opportunites elsewhere, especially Florida and California. I just had a conversation with a M.D. about an hour ago about the growing shortage of primary care physicians over the coming years. She believes that FNP's will be required to help fill these gaps.. If your ultimate goal is to stay near family, you should be able to move back to home base in a few years . Hope I helped you.
