Yoga is a healing system of theory and practice. It is a combination of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years.

While yoga evolved as a spiritual practice in Hinduism, in the Western world, a part of yoga, known as Asana, has grown popular as a form of purely physical exercise. Some Western forms have little or nothing to do with Hinduism or spirituality, but are simply a way of keeping fit and healthy.

Yoga was introduced to American society in the late 19th century by Swami Vivekananda, the founder of the Vedanta Society. He believed that India has an abundance of spiritual wealth and that yoga is a method that could help those who were bound by the materialism of capitalist societies to achieve spiritual well-being.

A survey released in May 2004 by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine focused on who used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), what was used, and why it was used in the United States by adults age 18 years and over during 2002. According to this survey, Yoga was the 5th most commonly used CAM therapy excluding prayer (5.1%) in the United States during 2002. Yoga is considered a mind-body intervention that is used to reduce the health effects of generalized stress.

What are the statistics of Alternative Medicines? ?
Q. Hey. I'm doing a debate for my science class and I am defending Alternative Meds. It would help me and my partner a lot if any of you could give us some statistics of how many successful treatments there have been. Please remember that we were assigned this side of the debate and did not choose. We already know examples of A.M all we need are statistics, whether they are all as one or separate for the different Alternative meds. examples include naturopathy, chiropractic, herbalism, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, and diet-based therapies Thank you. A. I don't know of any statistics on alternative therapies. The fact is that they do work, better than conventional medicine. The pharmaceutical companies won't be making a tremendous profit if they acknowledge this. Hence, there are no statistics. PS. It is a shame that you feel embarrassed about this assignment.

A. Out here in California there are many accredited Alternative Healing Schools that include yoga, aromatherapy, alternative medicine, etc. Clear Yoga is a great place to get your yoga teaching credential--that's in Paradise, California. You can get a Naturaopath Degree online that is totally on the up and up. That would incorporate everything you are interested in. I am interested in all the same things. I went to college and got 2 four-year degrees, one in business and one in Social and Behavioral Sciences. It was really a waste of time and money for me. I think it's very important to do something though. Get some kind of "enrichment". I teach yoga and I love it, I could be making a lot more money but I tried that and I was… [cont.]

Q. naturopathy? ayurveda? traditional chinese medicine? The Secret? Yoga/Qi Gong? Reiki? Energy Therapies? anything? do you guys recommend medical surgery?

A. Both my sister and I received acupuncture to eliminate cysts. Hers, the size of a grapefruit, mine, many small ones. She was scheduled for surgery and found a Korean acupuncturist, underwent 3 months of acupuncture, went back to the surgeon and he was amazed that there was not a trace of her large cyst. Surgery was the only way to get rid of it, he said. But it was gone. I went for 1 month and have had none since. All of this was in 1982. Acupuncture balances the energy and allows the body to actually heal itself. I also used acupuncture as an aid for my first child's delivery. She was born breech, naturally, without any complications, medications, or anaesthesia. I would recommend acupuncture or any combination of natural treatment… [cont.]
