An alphabet is a standardized set of letters — basic written symbols or graphemes — each of which roughly represents a phoneme in a spoken language, either as it exists now or as it was in the past. There are other systems, such as logographies, in which each character represents a word, morpheme, or semantic unit, and syllabaries, in which each character represents a syllable. Alphabets are classified according to how they indicate vowels:

The word "alphabet" came into Middle English from the Late Latin word Alphabetum, which in turn originated in the Ancient Greek Αλφάβητος Alphabetos, from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet. Alpha and beta in turn came from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet, and meant ox and house respectively. There are dozens of alphabets in use today, the most common being Latin, deriving from the first true alphabet, Greek. Most of them are composed of lines (linear writing); notable exceptions are Braille, fingerspelling (Sign language), and Morse code.

Where do police get the alphabet phoenetics from?
Q. How did they decide on alpha, foxtrot, zulu, etc to replace the alphabet letters? Yes but why have they picked those particular words for?
Asked by Le T ur pe an e - Sun Mar 1 04:50:04 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The phonetic alphabet has changed over the years. For instance, the letter B was BOY until 1927 and was changed to BAKER during WWII. It was changed to BRAVO in 1957. The reason we have the current designations is because audio researchers decided these words would be the one most distinctive of that particular letter and least likely to be confused with other letters. Example: charlie for C and EASY for E sounded too similar so E was changed to ECHO.

Should I learn the English Cursive before I start to learn the Cyrillic alphabet?
Q. Also, would I have to learn both block and cursive Russian? Also, do other languages with the latin alphabet write in cursive?
Asked by unknown - Thu Apr 9 09:06:54 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need to learn Russian cursive if you want to be able to read handwritten Russian. On the other hand, although cursive is the standard method of handwriting in Russia, consider that most communications are done electronically now-days, so learning to write in cursive is up to you. Everyone will still be able to understand if you write in block letters, and you can pick up on reading Russian cursive without much effort. P.S. If you decide to take up Russian cursive and feel that starting out in English will be easier, go for it. The styles of cursive are identical. P.s.s. Does the alphabet cover every possible sound we can make?
Q. I've tried to come up with alternate letters and whatnot (you know you have too), but they make absolutely no sense. Does the alphabet (in other languages as well) cover every sound humans can make?
Asked by TeeTop (+12,636 points) - Sun Oct 11 16:07:03 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is one alphabet which can represent all the sounds. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Other alphabets and scripts in general can represent accurately only the sounds of the languages using it. The English version of Latin alphabet can represent the English sounds, the French version the sounds sound in French etc Greek alphabet can represent only the Greek sounds and so on.
