Why do people chose to use alternative medicine?
Q. I'm studying alternative medicine for sociology at school and was wondering why people chose to use alternative medicine when modern medicine is available. Even people with cancer, chose to use alternative therapy instead of rely in doctors. I am just very unsure why. Thanks everyone! By the way, I'm not here to bag on you or tell you that what you believe is wrong. I'm just looking to find someone with first hand experience on the matter. People have said that they use them, but have they actually worked for you? Thanks for all of your replies.

A. Well, it certainly is popular. Lots of people use it as an adjunct to science based medicine. Relatively few people use it exclusively. I am not aware of any people who seek out AltMed when they have an actual medical emergency. It tends to be used for ill defined chronic conditions that tend to have symptoms that wax and wane. Part of it is a backlash against science. People tend to look at sciences' failures (thalidomide, Vioxx) and generalize that "all science" is bad...conveniently forgetting the huge gains in health in the last century as a result of a scientific approach. (cures for polio, many cancers, treatment of diabetes etc etc) The current generation has no idea how lucky they are to be alive in an era of science based… [cont.]

How can I use Alternative medicine to help with Migraines?
Q. I have horrible migraines. I have taken every type of presription medicine possible- none have worked. Usually when I get a headache, we resort to using steroids (which I hate). Is there any way I can use alternative medicine to help prevent or ease the pain of a migraine?

Q. I've got Blue Cross coverage, and I can't tell from their directory of doctors who would be more likely to have an alternative medicine leaning (in other words, if there's a problem, the first answer isn't just a pharmeseutical one, but might involve nutrition/natural remedies.) Any thoughts of how to find a doctor like this? Thanks!

A. Good luck with that! I have been unable to find such a person. Educate yourself. The internet is a great tool and find people to help you with advice. Personally, I have a number of books to refer to in addition to the internet, plus I see a chiropractor reguarly and a massage therapist. I also have different friends who know a lot about food and nutrition and natural remedies and healing. I consider my GP one of many resources when it comes to my health and well being.

How many deaths per year does alternative medicine cause?
Q. How many deaths does alternative medicine cause. Immediately response would be appreciated.
Asked by namiikitten - Tue May 5 18:11:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The report apparently shows there are 2,000 deaths/year from unnecessary surgery; 7000 deaths/year from medication errors in hospitals; 20,000 deaths/year from other errors in hospitals; 80,000 deaths/year from infections in hospitals; 106,000 deaths/year from non-error, adverse effects of medications - these total up to 225,000 deaths per year in the US from iatrogenic causes which ranks these deaths as the # 3 killer. But this is medical errors. Sorry I couldn't find anything about alternative medicine cause.

A. Your best two choices may be either a Doctor of Chiropractic (licensed in all 50 states), or a Naturopathic Physician (licensed in about a dozen states). Here is a link to a list of Chiropractic Colleges. Here is a list of accredited Naturopathic Colleges. There are unaccredited naturopathic schools, you need to avoid them. Best wishes and good luck.

A. In North America, the term naturopathic doctor IS protected. And there are only a handful of accredited colleges/universities. Here's a link to the accrediting body, the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges... The upper right corner of AANMC webpage hosts links to each of the schools.

But I have no idea which direction to take. Please help me by giving recommendations and advices! I'm currently in an undergraduate college that doesn't have this degree. A. That would be 'fake college'. No accredited schools offer degrees in that (in the US). That's because it doesn't work. Study after study have shown that's it's no more than the placebo effect. If you want to help people, great. Go for nursing or pre-med. If you want to scam people, you can get degrees in that stuff from the back of a magazine.

what are the alternative medicine for thyroid cancer?
Q. I have a papillary carcinoma,or a type of thyroid cancer does anyone know any diet or alternative medicine for this?
Asked by palmaresmarilyn - Wed Feb 7 02:42:34 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Chemo is not usually an option for thyroid cancer. Radioactive I131 is administered a few months after your thyroid is removed. The thyroid gland takes up iodine and so do the cancer cells. So by having treatment with I131 you will be killing the remaining cells, The benefits of treatment outweigh the side effects as there are few with I131. As for diet, the is no alternative for thyroid cancer but there is a diet you need to go on before scans and treatments called the Low Iodine Diet. Here is a site that can help you listed below

A. The problem with today's health care is that it has become too commercialized. They hype on cures and benefits but then they later qualify that the preparation has no approved therapeutic claims. Maybe the product is research based, maybe it does help but the price we pay will bring us to poverty faster than we can get cured. I solved the problem by going back to basics. I read and read about natural foods and juices and consulted a Chinese herbalists for detox. Then of course the basic 30 minute exercise, walking is fine, it doesn't have to be rigorous. Yoga meditation and vegetarianism is also a good idea. If I were you, I will rediscover nature's inexpensive bounty. It is a mind-body experience!

What could be the death toll of alternative medicine?
Q. While no accurate figures are generally kept, one country's unfortunate public health policy could give us an insight into the level of unnecessary deaths attributable to alternative medicine. Dr. Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, the former South African health minister whose AIDS denial and insistence in using an alternative 'remedy' to treat patients, while delaying the distribution of retrovirals, is blamed for the unnecessary deaths of over 300,000 people in one country alone. If your country adopted alternative medicine to treat a major illness or illnesses, what do you think the death toll could be? Have any other countries adopted any alternative medicines as a public health policy? If not, why not? Yes Dr Frank, I hadn't thought of that. [cont.]

Asked by 0 - Wed Dec 17 03:18:29 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sad to say, but many people are still unaware of the benefits available through alternative medicines and treatments. Times are indeed changing, and the movement toward a healthier and more natural lifestyle is constantly gaining ground. But there will always be resistance and scepticism, even within the medical field. It will be difficult to keep from getting discouraged. If this should become your choice of careers, I wish you the best. But don't just be a student of alternative medicine, become a teacher. We need to be better educated of this lifestyle.
