The maximum is governed by the accuracy of your measurement devices and how many non-zero leading digits there are in your measurements. You can only have the least number of significant figures to the right of the decimal point as that of the least accurate measuring device you use. If you have a measurement device accurate to +/-0.01g, then the maximum number of significant figures is the total of the number of places to the right of the decimal added to the number of non-leading places to the left of the decimal. Example: Measure with a device accurate to +/-0.0001. Look up the US Senators for your state and email them. (Hint: There's two of them.) And then your US Representative. (Hint: There's only one of him.) There's also your state Senators and state Representative, not to mention your Governor. All in all, you not only do your project, but you also get a second project in your government and civics. The only bad thing is they might take 2 weeks or so to respond, but they do like to respond to their constituents. (I've never failed to get a response.)
