Snakes are elongate legless carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes that can be distinguished from legless lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. Like all squamates, snakes are ectothermic amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales. Many species of snakes have skulls with many more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws. In order to accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes' paired organs (such as kidneys) appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Some species retain a pelvic girdle with a pair of vestigial claws on either side of the cloaca.

Living snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica and most islands. Fifteen families are currently recognized comprising 456 genera and over 2,900 species. They range in size from the tiny, 10 cm long thread snake to pythons and anacondas of up to 7.6 metres (25 ft) in length. The recently discovered fossil Titanoboa was 15 metres (49 ft) long. Snakes are thought to have evolved from either burrowing or aquatic lizards during the Cretaceous period (c 150 Ma). The diversity of modern snakes appeared during the Paleocene period (c 66 to 56 Ma).

Most species are non-venomous and those that have venom use it primarily to kill and subdue prey rather than for self-defense. Some possess venom potent enough to cause painful injury or death to humans. Those which are non-venomous either swallow prey alive or kill it via constriction.

What snake in north carolina spreads it head out like a cobra and is black with red dots all along both sides?
Q. This question has already been posted by me, but none of the snakes tha people said were the same as the snake I saw. I was walking home from school and I steped over a small snake. I looked back and it was red and black, about a foot long, and it spread it's head like a cobra. I live in north carolina. Does anyone know what it was, and is supposed to be in this state? Alright, I'm tried of EHN. It is not. It also has a head exactly like a black snake, and did not play dead, or spread its neck horizontally, inflate its body, hisse loudly, or strike at me. it just slithered off into a bush. And it was too skinny to be a EHN. It was about a little less than a foot long.

A. Ran by this question the last time you posted. I saw many people had mentioned, even insisted that there could only be one kind of snake of this description, an Eastern hognose snake. I also noticed alot of people remove there posts because you didn't acknowledge in any way, even though people offered pics. Well, if its not an Eastern hognose, then it must be a red spotted hedge stretcher, and arboreal tree slinger, a sidewalk coiler, a pufferfluffer, a red diamond slender twister, or possibly a common North Carolina sunbuster. its an eastern hognose! unless you are just terrible at descibing. Take a picture or take their words. Eastern hognoses come in many many color variations and they are the only snake in the U.S. that can do that.… [cont.]

How do I get my ribbon snake to get used to me?
Q. I got a ribbon snake about two weeks ago, but whenever I put my hand near him (in the snake) he flinches away. How do I get him to know that I am his friend? Also, just as a side question - he seems very bored. Are there any toys, or such, for snakes? By the way, my snake doesn't eat mice, it eats fish. I do try and show my snake that I'm feeding him.

A. If your ribbon snake is a w/c animal, it may never calm around you. There are some snakes that just don't take to handling, and they don't really ever know that you are "their friend". They don't have the capacity. They can learn to tolerate and sometimes even enjoy being out. To get them accustomed to being held though, you just have to hold them for short periods. Most snakes will flinch away from a hand, especially near the face. Try coming in from the side and picking up the snake mid body. The best thing you can do to help keep your snake active and interested in things is to provide a habitat with things to climb on and around. They don't play with things. There is no capacity in their brain for that, but most like plants-either… [cont.]
