Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग yóga) refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Within Hinduism, it also refers to one of the six orthodox (āstika) schools of Hindu philosophy, and to the goal towards which that school directs its practices. In Jainism, yoga is the sum total of all activities — mental, verbal and physical.

Major branches of yoga in Hindu philosophy include Rāja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. According to the authoritative Indian philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, yoga, based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, comprises one of the six main Hindu schools of philosophy (darshanas), together with Kapila's Samkhya, Gautama's Nyaya, Kanada's Vaisheshika, Jaimini's Purva Mimamsa, and Badarayana's Uttara Mimamsa or Vedanta. Many other Hindu texts discuss aspects of yoga, including the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Shiva Samhita and various Tantras.

The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings, and is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj", meaning "to control", "to yoke" or "to unite". Translations include "joining", "uniting", "union", "conjunction", and "means". It is also possible that the word yoga derives from "yujir samadhau," which means "contemplation" or "absorption." This translation fits better with the dualist Raja Yoga because it is through contemplation that discrimination between prakrti (nature) and purusha (pure consciousness) occurs.

Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy to a high level of attainment is called a yogi or yogini.

How should a beginner start doing Yoga?
Q. I'm interested in Yoga and would like to buy some DVDs so I can start doing it at home -- can anyone who's experienced with Yoga give me any tips for buying the right DVD?
Asked by Elle - Wed Jun 7 02:22:48 2006 - - 5 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Make sure you get a DVD that is for beginners, there are tons out there...once you get the basics down you can start looking at the programs to target your specific needs. The important thing is just to start slow, especially if you are doing so in your home without an instructor to correct improper posture, so that you do not injure yourself. Yoga.com has some excellent choices for beginning yoga:

How can I do yoga on a regular basis without buying DVDs or taking classes?
Q. Basically I would like to know where, on the internet, I could find free yoga lessons/classes/poses. Preferably more than one so that I wouldn't have to keep doing the same poses every single day. I would simply prefer to not spend any money, considering I don't have much available for spending at the moment. That's why I would like to find something on the internet.

A. I was also going to say yogatoday.com. Also, yougajournal.com has lots of tutorials and other helpful info. If you try yogatoday and there is a posture you just don't get, try looking it up on Yoga Journal for a step-by-step guide.

How does yoga differ from regular aerobics exercises?
Q. I have to admit that after all this time I am just not clear on what yoga is. When I watch it on TV it just shows people stretching. I don't see how it is a work out and how it makes people toned and muscular (like madonna) and how it could make you flexible and in shape. What exactly is yoga?
Asked by Think about it - Tue Aug 3 23:20:14 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yoga is not so much stretching as it is posing. You are able to develop muscle strength and memory, core strength, flexibility, and burn calories by holding a series of postures in increasing difficulty. The breathing exercises will help you to gain focus and increase your cardiovascular health to some degree. The balancing postures will help you to build strength in your core, and many of the poses, such as sun salutations, will increase your flexibility. However, you are correct that many of the toned muscular bodies you see on tv are not the work of yoga alone. I suggest yoga as a supplement to your strenght and cardio routine. It is a very worthwhile activity if you can find the time.
